Why do Tesco charge for potatoes?

Not a very good analogy! If you find that your Tesco potatoes are defective
before they reach their 'use by' date, you can take them back for a refund
or free replacement. Try doing that with TomTom maps when you find that your
brand new map doesn't include a feature (by-pass or whatever) which has been
in operation for several years.

But, to answer the original question, TT gets its maps from TeleAtlas or
NavTech and has to pay a licece fee on a per-instance basis - which it
recovers from its customers. They could possibly bundle a certain number of
'free' updates into the original purchase price of the device - but that
would put the price up and affect their competetiveness.

Thanks for the informative answer.

When I bought my tt is was blatantly obvious that it was out of date on a
lot of the roads I used, I would of like at least one free update.

Life goes on :)
