I'm wanting to buy a sat nav but before i do i have a question.

Lets say I have entered a postcode into the sat nav to take me
somewhere but on
the way I discover a road is closed. Does the sat nav
take this into account? is
it able to take this into account and then
re-direct me?

Also is it possible to view the exact route a sat nav is intending to
take you
before you start the journey or are you only able to find that
out as you go
along the journey.

Finally is it possible to enter a route YOU want the sat nav to take
you. for
example if i know where i want to go by a certain route and
which service
stations i want to stop at am i able to programme this
into the sat nav and just
use the sat nav to prompt me what to do as a
reminder?

I would appreciate your help guys. thanks.

I use TomTom, and yes, it allows you to do all of the above.

I use a PDA with TomTom Navigator6 and it does all the above. I would
imagine any flavour of TT would do the same ...

As others have said, TomTom will do everything you require.

Just to expand on how basic sat nav works, once you have set the destination
you can preview the route and accept it. Alternatively you can click
"calculate an alternative" or "add via locations" to define a specific
route. (There are also other ways of planning more complex routes in
advance.)

You can also choose the most suitable type of route e.g. avoiding motorways
or toll charges. I personally avoid selecting the "shortest route" because
it can take you up farm tracks and off by-passes to shortcut through
villages etc.

Once you are driving the sat nav will provide visual and spoken instructions
to follow the planned route but you can ignore these directions at any point
in order to avoid an obstruction or just to go a different way. The sat nav
will very rapidly (usually within a few hundred yards) recalculate another
route to your original destination. In summary, it doesn't matter where you
are, the sat nav will always find a route to your planned destination.
