I'm after a replacement for my ageing toshiba 740 and cheapo CF gps card,

I'd like one of the pda's that have a built in gps jobbie, but i want one
with the latest sirf 3 chipset of what ever it is, able to get a sat lock in
bad conditions and fast and all that.

Want to be able to run the latest tomtom versions, have a decent battery
life when using it handheld (toshiba manages just over an hour.. useless)
must have wi-fi connection, no real need for blootoof but it seems
unavoidable nowadays,

What i'd really like is a gprs connection so i can fall back on my t-mobile
data card sim i use in the laptop when i cant get on the net via a wifi
spot, but i dont think there's any of those phone pda's with a built in gps
dongle,

I guess if i could add a low profile gps dongle to a phone pda, on thats got
the latest chipset then that's do me, but i do not want a blootoof gps
dongle, we regulary drive for 10 or so hours when abroad, so the blootoof
dongles batteries would be dead long before we got where we were going,
plus i dont want the hassle of another battery to keep charged,

The gps dongle i have now is a good 4 inches tall, and quite bulky, are
there any plug in gps dongles that are low profile... also must have an
external antenna socket as i drive a motorhome with a large overhanging
luton section that blocks any view of the sky from the dash area.

After thinking about how much i really use my mobile phone, and where...
which is:
at home hardly ever, £5 top up lasts me over a month, when abroad i use a
call back sim that gives me free recieving of calls and 30p calls to
anywhere in europe from anywhere in europe,

And for mobile internet... i use that only when out in the motorhome, and
since last year that's been 95% of the time abroad, i can't afford the
tarrif for a european use gprs/3G data bundle, i'm not even using my laptops
data card with it's 100mb data allowance (gprs only) for £13.50 a month
anymore.

Soooo, i think i'll scrub the requirment for a phone/gprs/3g connection on
the pda i get, wifi is of far more use to me, most of the pda phones with
gps dont have wifi to start with, and i can always use my phone to act as a
modem for the pda if i need it to.

So i really want a decent pda that runs pocket pc 5 (i believe that's the
latest edition, the toshiba's stuck on ppc2002) i really want a decent
resolution screen for playing back aerial video's i get from my RC plane,
usb connector is a must then to connect the planes camera for downloads of
the vids,
sirf 3 gps, idealy one with the antenna on the top rather than a flip out,
but a flip out antenna would be ok if i can get all the other bits i want..
just must be the sirf 3 gps type, as i regulary drive through tall city
blocks, leavy lanes, up mountians etc, and my current set up is pretty naff
in that respect.

I use an Acer n311.

http://tinyurl.com/ymhov9

It has a 480 X 640 resolution display, nice and sharp and a USB host plus a
few other bits and bobs.
Doesn't have a built in GPS receiver so I use a bluetooth mouse. This is
better IMO as you can place the mouse where reception is best which is not
always where the screen is.

you're missing the point, the benefits and the huge subsidies.
