I have gps and google maps on my mobile phone but when I use it it
shows my position several yards from the road. Is this usual?

Depends on the levels of accuracy of the receiver and the maps.

An ordinary SatNav generally "snaps" your position to the nearest road to
take care of sporadic inaccuracy in the GPS position or of the road
location. So it won't track your GPS position until it "decides" you have
left the public road. Whereas Google Maps doesn't make that assumption, so
shows up inaccuracies.

I'd guess it to be general inaccuracies, perhaps of scale. Google maps on
my phone with a TomTom bluetooth gps receiver isn't particularly good.
Using the same gps receiver on my PDA with Tom Tom Navigator 6 is pretty
good, using the same GPS receiver on my PDA with Memory Map is very good.

Yes, a typical GPS is not so accurate that it will give a constant answer to
that precision. A sat nav will usually have some logic that moves your
position to a point on the road, and some smoothing of the position data so
you get a sensible picture as you move and change direction.
