My daughters tom tom one has lost its voice. It can only be heard when
earphones are plugged in. Help!!!!

You'd think it would be the other way round,
quieter with hearing obstructions!

Sorry.Message should have read that could only be heard through ear phones.
When ear phones unplugged no sound.

Speaker broken, wire fell off, PCB damage, audio amp faulty/US,
software problem.

2/4, could do better ;-)
Can't be software or amplifier problems because is excatly
the same signal that appears at the output socket that drives
the speaker, the usual leaf switch on the 3.5mm jack mutes
the speaker when it's inserted.
