How old is it? Sounds like the battery is on its way out.

bought 2nd hand so not sure of age but surely ageing battery would be a
gradual effect and not all of a sudden like this problem has started
occurring.
Looking back on some previous posts I see somebody suggests putting a
cocktail in reset hole for 5 seconds so I'll give that a try.

It's possible that it's not actually switching off. My one was crashing
during shutdown, then rebooting itself and turning back on, so the battery
drained while it was unattended. Restore the software from your last good
backup to sort this out.

That may be dodgy .... try a pina colada first ... if that doesen't work
then a bloody mary might be ok !
