Recently bought a tomtom 720 (about a month ago). When I charge the unit
via the cig lighter it comes up saying "Do you want to connect to the
computer". Also on several occasions it has just turned itself off, even
though the battery is fine and it also plugged in for charging.

Is this the norm?

Only a guess here but could it be that the car charge lead is faulty,
telling the TomTom that it is connected to a PC by power feeding into the
wrong pin on the mini USB connector? When you say it just turns itself off,
I had a similar experience with my 500 telling me it was shutting down in 10
seconds, turned off the option to switch off when no power is detected in
the supply lead and problem was cured. It just means that I have to turn it
on and off manually but my unit uses a permanent connection and the radio
feed is permanently live in the wiring the TomTom uses to supply power
through the control box.

Thanks Ian. Will try and find that option to turn off the shutdown when no
power detected. Where is this option, I thought I had exhausted all the
preferences?

No, are you using the supplied charger? If you are then it's faulty,
when you connect to a PC, a nominal voltage is connected via one of the
data lines and it is this that triggers the message. Using the correct
charger there should be zero voltage on the data lines.
