I was all set to buy a Road Angel 7000 until I discovered - you cannot
select a destination from the screen (select from map)! This feature is
invaluable to me on my Medion satnav and I am amazed the Road Angel cannot
do it!
So now I am looking for a GPS or satnav that will accept Memory Map so I can
use for walking. Must have a good battery life, be waterproof, visible in
daylight etc.
Any suggestions?
get a pda, such as ipaq 3715,1950 ect. i have one, if you have mm for
the pc you can install the pda version to your ipaq., works great as i
have a 2 gig sd card. as can put loads of maps on,

The Road Angel 7000 is the only weather-proof unit I've come across.
You can run Memory Map on any Windows Mobile 5 (or 6?) device, and the
usual recommendation is to put the device in a plastic bag.
I suspect the best compromise is to get two units, an Angel for walking
and a TomTom or similar for the car -- neither a financially nor an
environmentally satisfying solution, though.
Cheers,
Daniel.

I use a cheap PDA (Mitac Mio 168) with Tom Tom and Memory Map on it,
amongst other stuff. Works very well, but my unit is now pretty old.
When I upgrade it, or it breaks, I'll go for a more fully featured PDA
with Wifi at a minimum to ease connectivity.
Tom Tom is most excellent on-road in the Landrover and on the motorbike
with a suitable mount.
Memory Map is just as good hand-held, or in the Landrover, off roading.
Running on pure battery power and keeping the unit powered up running
MM I get about 3ish hours use. If I allow the screensaver to cut in it
extends this by only about 15 minutes (Not exhaustive testing, just
empirically noted on rambles). My particular unit doesn't have easily
replaceable batteries, so this may be an issue for you, but many newer
PDA's do have this facility. A friend uses a hand-cranked battery
charger on his ... but I dunno the make/model of either.

God, it sounds like you're lucky to have had it this length of time without
the flimsy little charging socket connector on the underside falling to
pieces under the weight of the man sized curly lead from the 12 volt car
supply!
