I am looking for a universal gadget for finding my way around cities
using public transport and walking, and something for data storage
etc.

I use a PPC to answer just this need
Memory map for OS walking maps
Co Pilot for road use
word / excel for notes
Reader for PDF files
Freeware "Metro" program covers public transport
It does MP3
they are so much more versatile

this is useful, what is a PPC?
I am thinking more of Euopean cities than hill walking route finding.
Does the metro give transport data for Europe?
