I am looking for a good GPS to take walking, preferably with a map display
1:50k or 1:25k. Is there such a device and are those scale maps available? i
only have experience of satnav in the car - good yes but no background
details off road and also the display suffers in sun as its 'shiny'.
Maybe I would be better off with a good map and a GPS that just gives me
co-ordinates?
A good battery life is desirable when out walking all day.
Thanks

I use Pocket Anquet, with which you can use 1:50000 or 1:25000 OS maps, on a
pda with a bluetooth GPS. Biggest problem is a 4 hour battery life. A
suitable mobile phone/blackberry may be an alternative with the same
software

I think they all suffer from the four-hour battery problem due to the
app scoffing enough CPU and other resources to keep the unit consuming
power rather than shutting stuff off. If it can recharge from a USB
port though, there are units like the "freeloader" that you can charge
up before leaving and connect to the unit to recharge in the field,
the freeloader has solar panels that can recharge on the move although
I doubt they'll supply enough to allow unlimited use. It also has
various additional connectors for popular mobiles. There's a
reasonable choice of similar battery banks available these days due to
the amount of gadgets we're all carting around.

Looks interesting but is it actually for sale? Website just has an
uninformative flash animation and then you have to register with them
to get more details, which suggests that either it's for sale but they
don't want to sell it, or that it's not actually a ready product yet.
Ah hang on, perhaps their animation just isn't letting me through, if
you google for it you can get to;
