I just received the latest update DVD for CN Europe from Garmin. The amount
of data has expanded enormously with this update and the full mapset is now
over 2.3GB.

I have a 2GB flash card on my 2610 so I trimmed the maps down to exclude
areas that I was definitely not interested in and got the data down to 1.8GB.
However this was still too big as when I attempted to transfer it, the
transfer stalled after about 4 hours! A bit more trimming got it down to
1.6GB which did transfer. It still took over 3 hours though. I find processes
which take that long on a computer a bit scary.

Maybe I have a slightly dodgy Compact Flash card which won't actually take
the full 2GB or maybe it needs some spare working space for the transfer.
Does anyone know?

A new, formatted, ready to use card will show a little less than 2 GB
when the properties are viewed from Windows. I typically see it
expressed as 2,047,541,284 bytes or 1.90 GB.

I've also found that the final file size for MapSource uploads usually
finishes up a little larger than the size shown at the bottom of the
Maps tab and start with a 1.7 or so selection if I want to use it all.

So I think what you're seeing is all normal and on track.

You can also defrag your CF card from Windows and the report at the
finish will tell you if there are any bad sectors and if you're getting
the full use of the card.

I think us 2610 users are destined to being abandoned by Garmin
eventually. What with the mapping getting bigger, the 2610 being
limited to 2 GB cards, and not getting any further support from Garmin
pretty much makes it destined for obsolescence.

I notice that you can't compare the 2610 to any of the newer models on
the Garmin pages whereas many of the slightly newer obsolete units can
be compared. Maybe Garmin just does not want people to notice the
features that have vanished from newer models.

I've the nüvi 200W, UK, Ireland, and have just bought the 2008 Update
which seems to have all the European Street Maps.

The upgrade asked which map to install - I stuck with just my UK one,
but could I have installed any of them? Presumably with a SD card to
provide more capacity.

Ah yes, I never thought of that. I should have re-formatted the card first

I'm afraid you're right. The problem is that I can't really see a logical
successor to the 2610. Hopefully though Garmin will continue to issue map
updates for a few years more. I hadn't realised that the unit was limited to
2 GB; that's the kind of thing the Garmin specs never tell you. The total
size of the map-set isn't really an issue for me though, as the area covered
is now so large that I'll never need all of it loaded at the same time.

I've heard of people who are using 4GB cards quite successfully,
though I haven't tried it myself.

Buy another card - split the maps into 2 halves with a decent overlap
- swap when needed.

I know about the unlock cost, but how much was the DVD and do you have
a link?
