I wonder what GPS sat. nav. devices will have in about 5 or 10 years
time.

I can imagine 3D maps, which actually look like aerial photos from a
helicopter (lower than a plane).

And for 2D, they'll be like Google Earth is now. And also Street View.
But this might happen in 2 years. What about 5 and 10 years time?

Any ideas people?

More detail so you get

"Take the left lane"

"Turn left at the traffic lights"

A program on TV showed the vans that drive around Europe videoing every
inch of the roads. The high res images are sent to India and synced with
maps so that detailed road features can be added to mapping.
It's these images that will eventually be mapped onto 3D landscapes for
the devices. Actual images of buildings and landmarks will be shown on
the route as 3D objects. Will be handy in cities where buildings are
more useful than signs for navigating by. Probably unfeasible until 1TB
of flash storage is available at low cost :P

Some features for 5-10 years;

-Hopefully we will have affordable mobile data plans that allow the
satnavs to maintain a constant and uptodate stream of traffic,
roadworks, radio stations and local news for the immediate area.

-POI will be in a common format, searchable online directly from the
satnav, each one behaving like a website with photos and detailed
information.

-Satnavs will broadcast their position to emergency services, recovery
firms, selected people.

-basic GPS reception will be included in all electrical appliances, or
at least mobiles, pdas, laptops, and mp3 players

They're already coming. I get 300M/month now on my plan.

Integration with Google Maps would go a long way towards that.

Only when you press the button, otherwise the privacy concerns would be
a problem, though we may be going that way with RFID.

I need to change, Virgin costs about £5 per meg. Of course the satnavs
will need a mobile data connection built in, and I don't fancy paying
£35 a month for a few extra satnav functions.

I've not tried that tomtom home integration with google maps yet, but,
google maps mostly relies on postcodes rather than lon/lats so lacks
accuracy. I just tested it in Cambridge and searched for Addenbrookes
hospital. Two matches came up, but were both a mile off of the mark.
Little use in an emergency.

I can imagine -
TT: Joe Blogs has just entered the car at position _driver_. He is not
permitted to drive between the hours of _11pm and 5am_. Please change
drivers or the _newly qualified driver_ infringement will be reported to
the police. Have a nice journey.

or

TT: Stop the car in 100 yards. You will soon be entering an
_anti-terror_ restricted movement zone.
TT: You have arrived at the _anti-terror_ restricted movement zone.
Please ring 0898 999 if you wish to proceed further.
