I have recently purchased a boat that came with a Garmin GPS 152 fitted.
This is connected to the VHF Radio via NMEA and provides both myself and the
people I would call in an emergency with GPS Position.

Problem is when I start the engine (which will be very likely in an
emergency), there seems to be so much draw on the battery that the GPS unit
turns itself off.

I therefore have to remember to turn the GPS on again every time I start the
engine. (otherwise I also stop recording my track and distance etc.)

My question is really. Is there not a way in which I could set the unit up
so that it turns on as soon as the power is turned on. Just like the VHF
Radio turns on when I turn the power on?

TIA

Perhaps connect the feed of the Garmin to the same feed the VHF is connected
to

They are connected to the same feed. The Garmin requires me to push a button
to turn it on again. I was hoping that there might be some way to override
this so it turns on as soon as it received power.

I'm not explicitly familiar with your unit, but if it has an internal
battery it should have a setting so that it either turns off, or keeps
going on loss of external power. If it doesn't then your easy solution
might be to feed it from a small extra battery isolated from the main
supply by a diode so it normally charges in parallel with the main batt
but doesn't get affected by starting volt drop.

Connect the Garmin and the VHF to the other battery, not to the cranking
battery.

If you don't have two batteries, then stop and wonder for a moment if
you really ought to think about fitting another.
