Erratic GPS recording

My recorded walk yesterday (Sunday 27th March, Sussex, UK, spells of rain) on
my pocket computer (HPC Touch Pro 2 under Windows Mobile 6.1) was the worst
I've seen. An 8 mile walk became about 11 miles, due to several bursts of
erratic signals that went way outside the immediate vicinity. Like most of my
walks, this included a proportion of lightly wooded track, but in the past
that has just resulted in lost signals, not false ones.

It's a longshot, but before I pursue other likely causes, I wonder if
satellite performance can ever deteriorate enough to cause this sort of
behaviour? If so, then anyone else experience similar results please?

Well, we did do a fair bit of stopping to study the map, as there were
sections with a surplus of paths through the woods and poor signing. But not
much more than usual.

Anyone else with any recordings of walks/drives from Sunday?

You got 11 miles of exercise in 8 miles, and you're complaining?

The satellites themselves won't deteriorate en masse, but their
constellation for a particular place & time might be less than
optimal.

Trimble's "Planning Software" is designed to provide that sort of
insight.


It's been a while since I've used it - I'm not sure it can be
retroactive, but don't see why it couldn't be used that way. Try it
out.
