I notice that the new iPhone 3G stamps photos with GPS data. I took a
photo and looking at the properties (Similar to EXIF data) on my PC I
can see the lat/lon is listed as:

Latitude 51; 4.89; 0
Longitude 1; 4.6; 0

I've thrown them at Google Maps and it's not fond of them, neither is
Autoroute so I thought it might be Degrees; Minutes; Seconds so threw
them at* http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/bickel/DDDMMSS-decimal.html but
it doesn't like doesn't like the 4.89 and converts it to 4.

Any ideas what these figures are exactly and where I can convert them
to something useful on Google Maps? I uploaded the photo to Flickr
and it didn't pay attention to the Lat/Lon and asked me to place the
photo on a map from scratch.

* It coverts them to 51.066667, 1.066667 which is NEAR to where the
photo was taken, but not quite right listing it about a mile away but
if it's skipping the .89 and .6 then I guess that would be reasonable.

Any ideas what the correct name for the figures measured in the EXIF
are?

Just a quick check on something, I have a Nokia N95 and it stamps GPS
data into the pics too, when I uploaded the photos to flickr from the
phone and told the phone uploader to scale them down, it lost the GPS
data. When I uploaded the pics from the phone without scaling, the
GPS data made it through and was accurate. So when using the pictures
just make sure any processing being done by the upload process isn't
stomping on the data. If you've copied the pics off, looked at the
exif data and then uploaded them yourself to flickr then that should
have worked.

Other than that, all I can suggest is that you have a look at the
Tatra 813 pictures on my flickr page (URL in sig) and see if the
version you can download still retains the EXIF GPS data and compare
it to what you've got, if no GPS data then email me and I can send you
some pics with correct GPS data for comparison.

I plugged the phone in to sync it with iTunes and nabbed the photos
off using Windows Explorer.

I downloaded the originals of both yours and mine and the lat/lon is
in the same format. I uploaded another copy of the photo (I noticed
my Flickr Pro account lapsed last week so I've just renewed it a few
minutes ago) but still nothing.

Then I had a look at my Flickr settings and noticed the problem:
"Import EXIF location data" was set to "no" (I assume this is the
default) so I've changed it to Yes now and uploaded the photo.

However, Flickr now says the photo was taken somewhere near
Southampton when it was actually taken in south-easten Kent. Hmph.

The photo is here: <http://flickr.com/photos/hayn0r/2661054908/> where
you can download the Original version (With EXIF location data intact)

Windows says:
Latitude: 51; 4.93; 0
Longitude: 1; 4.68; 0

Going to "More properties" in Flickr says:
Latitude: N 51° 4.93' 0"
Longitude: W 1° 4.68' 0"

Clicking on the (map) link in Flickr says:
Latitude: 51°4' 56" N
Longitude: 1°4' 41" W

I'm now even more befuddled than I was before.

That's 51 degrees and 4.93 minutes lat;

> Clicking on the (map) link in Flickr says:

That's 51 degrees, 4 minutes and 56 seconds lat.

Those are two different ways of saying the same thing, 4.93 minutes is
4 minutes 55.8 seconds, just figure out 93% of 60 to see.

So the import may be going fine, all you have to do is figure out why
it's so inaccurate, first off I'd suggest trying again, this time
leaving the phone outside to get the right location and a good fix,
then whip it up, take a pic and put it down again to allow it to keep
a good fix, as we don't know yet when it checks the GPS for a location
fix. Having your hands and head near the phone when it's trying to
get a fix doesn't help it.

When using my N95 the phone can struggle to get a fix, even with the
keypad open (the GPS aerial is behind the keypad on the N95), it helps
if I keep the keypad uncovered by holding the phone at the other end
until it's got the fix, if you can find out where the GPS antenna
(different to the phone one) is then you could try that too.

Well, Chris who has replied to this thread managed to convert the data
from the EXIF data which Windows gave me from the .jpg to a pretty
accurate location but Flickr, based on the exact same file, is miles
and miles away and two places in Flickr give two different readings of
where the photo was taken.
