Most of the higher end GPS state they have traffic info but how do they
actually RECEIVE it? Do you have to pay to subscribe or use your mobile
phone to dial via Bluetooth or something?
And how easy/reliable is it?
yes

You can use bluetooth to a mobile phone which is what the tomtom
things do, however some receive traffic info via radio, piggy-backed
on RDS data, but I'm told this isn't that good in this country, the
data itself isn't up to much. This is called TMC, one of Garmin's
products is on the following;

I've not bothered with any of the traffic warning systems so have no
idea what any of them are like in real life.

I've got a little £30 thing that gives you advance warning of jams on
motorways you're already on, and sometimes warns you with enough time to
detour that there's a jam on the motorway you're about to join. A series of
coloured LEDs give an indication of how far you have to go before you get to
the jam. Their colour (orange or red) indicate its severity.
You can buy it through the RAC. I've had it about 8 years.

Yes I've seen those before, but you don't appear to be able to buy
them any more, the RAC shop website doesn't have them, and Traffic
Master (who originally sold them) dropped them some time ago.

Hang on to it ;-)
If you or anyone else knows where they can still be bought from then
do let me know.
