Hi, hope you can help.

I'd like to buy maps and USB positioner for use when I go on European
cruises and use on my portable/laptop. Basically, I'd like to know what
towns I'm
going past when travelling around Europe on a cruise ship. Town road detail
isn't important but all of Europe essential.

Can anyone suggest the best package for me please?

Do cruise ships have wifi? If so, you could use any kind of plugin gps
you choose with google maps.
This nice little program (http://mehere.glenmurphy.com/ ) will take the
location data and turn it into a google map/google earth network link.

What do you mean by "Europe"? Most European mapping packages don't include
the Danube/Black Sea or even largish areas of Turkey for example.

However if you want cheap and to run a package on a PC then I would suggest
one possibility is Autoroute and a USB GPS set. Just about any USB dongle
will work, but remember it won't work inside the ship because of the tonnes
of metal overhead.

.............. many thanks. Autoroute 2007 plus the MS USB dongle has now
been secured from John Lewis via Quidco. The link to the mehere looks
interesting as I find Earth+ captivating and so useful in feeling what a
place might be like before I go. Virtual exploration!

Thanks for both of your help.

After a trip I enjoy following the GPS track in Google Earth or Google
Maps, it's surprising what you can pick out from a journey. I've not
used Autoroute, but hopefully during the cruise you can save the gps
tracks for interesting areas.

If your digital camera and GPS clock are telling the same time, it is
possible to then geotag the photos with their exact location enroute.
There are downloadable software methods for doing this such as RoboGeo,
or a good website http://www.everytrail.com/ that does it all for you
and generates a map of your route with photos in the correct paces.
