I've got a Nokia 6120 (S60) mobile and Holux GPS receiver.
I've tried both Google Mobile Maps and Nokia Maps, and they are great
for finding/tracking where you are, and also finding other places, but
the routing from one to the other is rather lacking.
Generally walking about, all I really need is a direction and distance
to where I'm going rather than a turn by turn guide that won't let me
walk the wrong way up a one way street (Nokia maps).
Are there any simple add-ons to GMM or Nokia maps that allows you to
find where you're going then just points you in the right direction
(just like my Garmin Extrex did before its untimely demise)?
Or does the fact that the gps and phone can move independently of each
other cause the whole thing to get too confusing?

You can get a number of S60-based GPS apps that basically mimic the
etrex, I tried one of them briefly, can't remember the details, but it
would allow you to set a waypoint similar to how you could do it on
the etrex. However you'd have to know the co-ordinates of your
destination, not like with tomtom/nokia maps/garmin mobile where you
can search for addresses. I suspect you are after a combination of
the two.
Garmin Mobile XT seems to have a routing option, "off-road", that can
be used to "route" to a location by basically just drawing a straight
line between your current location and your destination.

I thought it had a pedestrian option that ignored one-way streets and
didn't take you on motorways!

Yup, awkward as always.

I'll go and have a look... Hmm £76. Hmmm

I thought it would so too, you can set it to "on foot", but it was still
determined to take me round a one-way system whether I wanted to go that
way or not

It might not be worth it, but it's easy to steal for an extended test,
then you can pay for it if you like it. I personally think it's
utterly pants, several generations behind tomtom version 6, which is
in itself several generations behind tomtom's dedicated devices.
Garmin Mobile XT does however take up very little storage space
compared to tomtom, so if you can put up with the dreadful user
interface, terrible search, ludicrous menu paths, woeful journey time
estimates and so on, then you might find it's worth the cash.
Personally I'm waiting for tomtom to add internal GPS support to their
product, but it might be a fruitless wait.

Heh, not so good. I think there's a new beta version these days, I've
not used it much though.
