A few months ago I was given a Mio 168 with Tomtom software version V5, I've
used it on a number of occasions over the last few weeks and in the main
have been quite impressed when using the 'quickest route option'.
However when using the the 'shortest route' option I have on a number of
occasions found myself winding up in some pretty uncomfortable situations,
i.e. driving along seemingly unending single track winding country lanes,
sometimes so narrow that overhanging branches have put some very nasty
scratches along the side of my Focus estate, not to mention what effect the
potholes must have had on the suspension!
I thought there may be a 'shortest route' option using only A and (at least
'reasonable') B roads, omitting ones which are little more than cart tracks,
unfortunately I can't appear to find anything in the menu offering this type
of option, I therefore wondered if there is some way around it, I would be
grateful if anyone can offer a solution.
Cheers Ivan

the best option is to know something about your destination. I often
look in a road atlas first and decide to take a particular turn off the
Mway, regardless of what the voice tells me. That way it soon
re-calculates the route avoiding the back roads. I have found a few
routes where quickest and shortest both are the same, generally between
rural points.

Wouldn't you need to select "fastest Riute" ? This avoids minor roads on my
TomTom and I've never been directed down a track yet.

I just tried my Tomtom on shortest route to the nearest town and sure enough
it took me over a farm track that I know is only just about passable in a
car in summer when the ground is hard, but not in winter when its wet and
muddy. Set it to Fastest route and you should never be troubled by narrow
tracks again.

Then you have been fortunate, or possibly you have never driven in the
areas TomTom has problems with. I live on the South Downs and there are
many locations where "Fastest Route" gives a route unsuitable for
anythign other than a 4x4 with mud tyres, even more where it leads to
roads that are (just) passable in a car but not in a truck.
There are a couple of famous locations in Hampshire that now have "DO
NOT FOLLOW SATNAV" warning signs.
