Is my partner's TomTOM One third edition nurdled beyond repair? When she
tries to connect it to her computer (or perhaps more relevantly, to ANY
computer) it eventually shows up in Windows 7 "Devices & Printers", but not
as a drive in "Computer". The entry in "Devices etc." shows two entries in
"properties" as a storage device and as a USB device, both OK, but not the
third entry that mine shows as a drive letter.

If I follow normal procedure and connect it with a USB cable, and THEN turn
it in, it merely asks for her PIN and then starts up as if not connected.
Strangely enough, if I turn it on first and THEN plug it in, it shows the
"connect to computer - No/Yes" screen, and on hitting "yes" it connects (the
usual USB device connecting sound" but only with the limitations mentioned
above.

Naturally I've been through all the suggestions on the TomTom website and
those made by customer services (soft reset first etc.) I've reinstalled
TomTom Home, but as it's not correctly connected anyway that was a vain
hope. I'm not very techie, but my guess is that it is showing up the storage
capacity, but not booting as a drive. Does that make any sense? Any
suggestions?

Maybe.

Go to Disk Management and try to assign a drive letter to the drive, if it
shows there. If it doesn't show there, something is amiss.

To get to Disk Management, here's one way that is version independent, I
think (since you didn't tell us which version of Windows). Open Windows
Explorer (not Internet Explorer), right click on Computer or My Computer,
choose Manage from the menu, and find Disk Management in the window that
will appear in few seconds.

Hmm, when I tried to connect it again it caused a BSOD error. When I got
it to connect, it didn't show up in Disk Management, so I guess that
means it's had it. Oddly enough, it still works fine as a satnav - we
just can't update it. We'll use it till the maps are too far out of date
to bother, and then bin it. Thanks for the help;

The only other thought I have is trying a different USB cable. Not much to
offer, sorry :-(

But I agree, it doesn't sound good, with a BSOD and all that.

I also noticed this problem when using a PIN ! Try to remove it.
I have a brand new ONE IQR ...trying to replace my old ONE v1
bought in 2006.

You also need to connect your TomTom to a direct USB plug (not via a
hub). I suppose it is more for power problem ...but sometimes not.
