Hi,

please forgive me if might be asked in the past. I did not find usefull
about that issue.

I newly have a TomTom XL² with European maps. My problem start cause the
software TomTomHOME is only available for windows. However, there is
wine and the device can be mounted as simple disk so there *shouldn't*
be any problem. But this seems to be a misapprehension.

It is easy to install the software (only works in winXP mode) but the
software is not finding the device at all. I did try many thinks but
without success. :-(

As the possibilities to configure the device without the host software
is somewhat limited, I search for a way to use it. I have no way to use
windows as there is no such expensive peace of shit^Wsoftware anywhere
in my reachable range.

Is there anybody out there who was successful using TomTomHOME under
linux wine? (Using, not only installing...)

The second problem has to do with the limited setting capabilities on
the device itself. I think and read about to enhance the menu with all
the preferences settings missing in the current menus. I found
mediabreak:http://www.opentom.org/ and the page about menu tuning. But
this is about the original "one" so if I load the menu onto the device
the original menu is not reachable any more and also can not be
substituted by the new one completely. More important, there is no way
to get the map view back. BUT, and this is important, I can change many
settings which are not otherwise reachable and the settings seems to
stay persistent also after killing the tuned menu to get the original
one back.

Is there any way to bring that preferences dialogs to the device without
killing the original menu?

Sorry to hear the device only does what it claims to do and not the other
things you want it to do. BTW you don't need Windows, TomTom Home is also
available for Mac OSX. And I believe it will run with Virtualbox running
XP, if that's a possibility for you. I believe the problem you are having
with Wine may be on account of the poor support Wine gives to USB drives.
You might go to http://www.winehq.org/ and search for TomTom. Also look at
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=3628 and
click on 1.x or 2.x.

Well, It do not do all what it claims to do. There is references in the
manual pointing to preferences dialogs which do not exist.

Same problem. And more over, to run TomTomHOME under Mac OSX I have to
buy not only the OS than also a computer it can run on.

I believe that it work under any virtualisation as there are KVM, VMWare
or Virtualbox. However, that is not helpful at all as I have no windows
OS anywhere so I need to buy one of that overexpensive peace of software
which is not an option.

Oh, that shouldn't be the problem. Even the garmin windows software work
with mounted garmin devices. And Garmin is very delicate with there
linux support.

The software do not need to do any USB checks either as it is not
needed. The device is mounted and all filesystem is available to wine as
separate drive (In my case d:).

I do not think that is is the fault of wine that the software do not
run. It is the fault of tomtom.

Don't you think I didn't do that? Actual there is no solution as tomtom
do not give any help or any hint what you have to do to run the
software. There is only some reverse engineering without success at the
moment.

And let me quote some from one page about the problem which says all:
: There were only two things I use that don't work in Linux- iTunes and
: TomTomHome. iTunes works now.
: -- Wolf Butler

Its it a pity that there are companies out there which make good
hardware but just ignoring a mayor part of there customers who run linux
only. And even more if they use linux for the device itself.

The TomTom PND is a consumer device and apparently TomTom has determined
that Linux is not used by consumers in sufficient numbers to warrant the
costs to develop and support Home under Linux. If they change their mind
then you will be happy and their shareholders will be the ones who suffer.
