Hi All

I hope this is the right place to post, if not I'm sorry and would you
please point me to the right group.

I have a TomTom 720t which I have had for about two years.

When I got it I loaded up home and went to the map warranty and got my
new map update.
Now being a dumb blond I did not back the unit up.

I do not know what went wrong BUT I lost all my stuff on the Tomtom
720t.

I see from the home program I no longer can get the map that I had.

So where can I buy a uk map to down load to my computer and NOT to my
TomTom unit for me to lose again and have to buy a new one.

Also any instruction on how to load onto a 2 gig card

many thanks

Sheila a Dumb Blond

Does the GPS still start-up normally?
Have you tried the hidden reset button? (I have this on my Go700)
Is there a problem doing a backup that you did not complete one? For a long
time I had a problem with backup not completing properly and no backup was
made. I found out that something in the Flash memory had been corrupted. Was
told to treat it like any plug-in flash memory and scan for and repair any
errors.
This is in 'My computer' under the drive letter for your gps. Right click on
the drive letter and select 'Properties'. On the TOOLS tab, Error-checking,
click Check Now...
Click both check boxes to automatically fix system errors and attempt
recovery of bad sectors. Then hit Start.
This is for an XP computer. Other OS's may be different.
I can now make backups normally.

There was one version of TomTom operating program that when you loaded it,
erased all your favorites. I got bitten by that but with backups, is easy to
restore things.

This link will (hopefully) show how to reset your 720:

http://www.tomtom.com/support/solution.php?GID=1&PID=1682&SID=0&CID=152&Language=1&query=%22region%22&FID=6965

If not, get to the page from www.tomtom.com via FAQ or Support?

As soon as you get your TomTom working, connect it to your PC using TT Home
and start Windows Explorer (a quick way of doing this is to hold down the
"Windows" key, normally second from left on bottom row of keyboard, and
press the letter "e" (no quote marks). Then create a new folder (in
Windows Explorer click highlight your hard disk (usually Local Disk (C:),
click "File" (top left),"New", "Folder" then enter a name (such as TT
Backup). Next, highlight the TomTom folder (something like "E:\TomTom
720" - it all depends upon what name TomTom used, but should be easy to
locate), hold down the Control (Ctrl) key, bottom left) and press "c"
(copy), highlight the new folder you just created on your PC (TT Backup)
then hold down the control key and press "v" (paste). This copies your
ENTIRE TT to the backup folder on your PC so that you can always get back to
a working TT by copying the entire contents of your backup folder back to
your TT root "E:\TomTom 720"? - TomTom Home does NOT create a complete
backup of a TomTom (so is useless).

Hi Sheila,

Current Western Europe maps are:
Western_Europe_835_2419 'Full' - Includes IQ Routes & ALG and CSpeech & ASR
(Needs Kate, computer, voice if you want to 'read' foreign-language towns,
street names...) needs navcore 8.2 or higher
Western_Europe_1GB_835_2420 a 1GB version
Western_Europe_835_2421 Has Cspeech and ASR, needs navcore 8.2 or higher

UK & ROI 835.2419 'Full' Get this if you don't want Europe

Western_and_Central_Europe_835_2419 'Full' This is the one to have but is
just over 2GB, so needs a 4GB card (if the TT720 can handle one?)

Western_and_Central_Europe_2GB_835_2420 This is the 2GB version designed for
a 2GB card, no goodies

Western_and_Central_Europe_835_2421 As 2421 above but includes Central
Europe

Western_and_Central_Europe_2GB_835_2421 The 2GB version

Confused? The map name is the region(s) covered, 835 the current version
and the last 4 digits identifies which goodies, if any, are included. ALG
(Automatic Lane Guidance) is very useful - especially in countries where
they drive on the right.

How to find you navcore (system) version? Tap the bottom RH corner of your
TT to get the Status summary screen - it shows 'No route planned' (if you
haven't set a current route), time (top R), down RHS, number of satellites,
current position (Lat/Long), possibly phone and just above the 'Done' button
'version' and a number. In order to use a computer voice the version needs
to 8.2 or higher. Voices can, I think, be downloaded from the TomTom
website.

My understanding is that, with removable media, you can have maps stored in
internal memory, removable media (SD? card) or both - 'Change preferences',
'Manage maps', 'Switch map' lets you achieve this. My TT is an old 910 with
a hard disc, no removable media so I cannot check this theory.

If you have plenty of storage on your PC (larger than an 80GB hard disc)
keep copies of your SD cards on it.

Having got this far, just re-read what you wrote:

'I now have version 8.351 and Western Europe 705.1480'

I'm guessing 8.351 is the navcore version - so all OK on that front but
705.1480 sound like a very old version - take a look at this link:

http://www.tomtom.com/products/maps/select.php?D=10

It recommends the 2GB version of Western and Central Europe 2419 for your
TT. I think the map coverage/detail is the same for 'Full' and 2GB
versions, the latter, perhaps, has less POIs, voices. The 2GB version
certainly has IQ Routes.
