I have a TomTom 300 which is of course some years old, but it has always
worked well.  I have noticed though recently that it takes ages to find
satellites and know where it is.  This afternoon, I had travelled the
best part of 2 miles before it connected.  Maps are up to date.  Any
ideas please?

Are you going a lot longer between the times you have it turned on ?

It will take much longer to find the satellites if its been off for much longer.

longer.
Thanks Rod.  An interesting suggestion.  It had not been used for a week
or 10 days before the occasion I refer to, but this I would have thought
was about my normal use frequency.  I'll try turning it on more often
and see if this improves it!
Thanks again

Try updating QuickGPSfix via the TomTom Home sotware. This updates the basic
satellite data, which normally degrades with time.

From the TomTom website:
Your TomTom device uses the signals of at least 4 satellites to find out
where you are. To start navigating, it needs to know exactly where each
satellite is. So start your journey faster with TomTom QuickGPSfixT. This
clever service speeds up the time it takes to fix your GPS position, helping
you to set off within 30 seconds - even when the GPS signal is weak or
partially blocked.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.  I had a look, but I don't think it is available for a 300.  In
fact I got 9n to TomTom and they suggested that I should reinstall the
device application.  I have done this, and it seems better, but I still
have to go out with it properly to see.  Anyway, thanks everyone for
your asssistance.

I've got a Tomtom one, and if I let the battery flat, which doesn't take
more than a few days now, it is very slow to pick up satellites until I
put the clock right. If it's a few hours adrift then the stored
satellite data doesn't seem to relate to what's actually up there
