Where are Points of Interest stored?
Everytime I download a new map I loose my points of interest. Is there a
way of avoiding this problem?

Terry,
they're stored in the crpoi.dat file which is in the map
directory/folder in your TomTom.
Just make a copy of it before you install your new map and then drop it
back in after updating.
If you actually made a backup of your old map before updating you'll
find it in there.
