Just use TomTom Home to know the size of the present map + free and
compare with the size of your new map downloaded to the PC into
TomTom>HOME>Download>complete>map folder. The size of the new map
cannot exceed this amount ..and keep some 50 MB free for MapShare
updates.

Presumably its because they are attempting to compete at the low end of the
market.

update.

Yeah, but they do appear to do that, thats why the previous map is deleted first.

> Once one has avoided this problem, TT seem to make an otherwise nice unit

Yep, I prefer them myself. But I avoid their low end GPSs.

I've used others as well, particularly Navig8r and Navman.

Not for turn by turn GPSs around the world it isnt.

And they have their own problems, particularly with the turn instructions being
too late.

You dont get that with TTs.
