I recently bought an XL325 SE. It worked fine out of the box. I connected it
to my computer and installed Tom-tom Home version 2.7. It tried to download
an update to the application and a new map. the downloads all failed to
install. (Minor downloads such as mapshare and voices had worked OK.) They
would make almost 2/3 of the installation and then fail. Subsequent attempts
had the same results. The error messages referenced write errors involving
specific files. Each attempt hung on a different file. (I am running Vista
Home Premium)
Calls to tech support tried several fixes, including reformatting the
device. I was left with a device lacking the application and the map. The
installation error was unchanged. Tech support hooked me up with a return
authorization and I shipped the unit to Texas and quickly got a replacement.
When the replacement was connected to TT Home I got the same failed download
on the map update, leaving me with an application but no map. Again, tech
support was called. This agent tried several fixes. She had me uninstall TT
Home, including the hidden files. We reconnected the device and set up a new
email login and password. She made sure a new map was available in the
account and we tried again. Same result and failed install. We tried several
times with my AV shut down, on the theory that was interfering with the
install. No luck. We tried uninstalling TT Home, including the hidden files,
and she emailed me a link to download version 2.6 of TT Home. This didn't
work, either. Another RMA and I now have my 3rd unit. It works fine out of
the box. I have been unwilling to attempt syncing to the computer.
Has anyone had similar experiences and have you found a fix not yet tried
here? Or, do I have to accept the current map is the only one I will ever
have? I have uninstalled TT Home. I can start fresh by plugging in the
device and installing version 2.6 and see if this works. My fear is I will
trash another device. Tech support has been unable to solve this. I don't
think there is anything wrong with the devices. But nothing they have taken
me through makes any difference. I welcome feedback from anyone who has
ideas as to where the trouble lies.
Thanks,
Kevin

Have you enabled TTHome to run in 'supervisor' (or whatever it is called in

Vista) mode? From memory, I think you right-click TTHome and launch in
'supervisor' mode. From the same hazy memory I think there's a way of
setting TTHome to always run in the right mode, but it's a few years since I
solved this for a friend - I've stayed with XP.

I would think if that were the case, the op should have seen some sort

of warning. However, I do agree the problem is somehow related to his
machine or setup else the problem would be more common. I've no idea
what the problem might be and the only suggestion I would make is to use
window explorer to copy all files from the device to hd. Everybody
should do this anyway and it's preferable (and I believe faster) than
using HOME. Of course, if you get an error at this point you know
there's something flaky with your machine. It would be great if op could
get access to another machine to see if problem repeats.
Thanks for the idea. When I get brave enough to risk another go, I will try
that.
