Can I Force it to Go My Way?

I just got an XXL 550 TM today.

Is it possible to enter a starting point and a destination and then
enter intermediate points, or use some other method, to force it to
accept the route via which I want to travel?

Hardly anything could be easier than moving a recommended route at
maps.google.com. However it is done, though, that is the objective--the
route that I believe to be best, which may not be the route the TomTom
chooses. Example: There are a couple of good ways to get to
Northeastern NJ from my home that do not involve Philadelphia, I-95,
the NJ Turnpike, et al--particularly on a beach weekend!

Is it possible to save a route (itinerary) for future use?

Sure, you plan what TomTom call an Itinerary. Start it with just the start
and end points and then add as few waypoints as necessary to nudge the route
to follow your preferences. Note that when it comes to divided highways and
highway junctions TomTom is very literal, so you must zoom in to such
locations to ensure you place the waypoint in the right direction lane or
TomTom will obediently take you on a detour to pass through any points you
placed on the wrong sides of the highways. Each Itinerary is stored in its
individual file that can be named, saved, re-edited and re-used.

Thanks for taking time to reply. On the XXL 550, after the unit has
calculated the basic route one has the option to "Change Route." Upon
selecting Change Route there are just two relevant options: "Calculate
Alternative" and "Travel via...." The latter is the means of adding the
waypoint to which you refer. The problem is that my route requires two
waypoints, but after I enter the first waypoint I am unable to enter a
second; I am asked if I want to replace the first. If Yes, I have a new
route that I don't want; if No, I am back to my single waypoint.

In other words, I can't find a way to enter multiple waypoints. I'll go
back go Google. The XXL 550 is new, however, and there isn't much
available. I bought the 550 thinking it might be for advanced users;
perhaps I got the dummies model instead.

My XL340S also frustrated me in that I couldn't add more than a single
waypoint.

I quickly discovered the only sensible way to plan trips on the machine was
to create an Itinerary.
But before building the itinerary I store every waypoint as a Favorite so I
can select it with ease.
Also, the machine stores all Favorites and Itineraries in its memory so you
never lose your work if it encounters a software bug.
Itineraries built on Favorites and stored so you can recall them is the only
way to go, IMHO.
I know it's weird to think of a casual waypoint as a Favorite, but it works!
