bug in the Garmin colorado 400c (sea version with US Marine detail g2 v2.51)

bug: unrecoverable unrestartable system collapse while zooming in map
(over 200 km)

Usage : Hiking in Colombia South America, using routable road maps

Mode: The GPS is in km , meter, celsius mode. language Am English,
North up, autozoom off, detail normal,lock on road off
marine chart mode :off; other modes auto or default.

Bugdescription : zooming with the zoomwheel in the map screen while
having a route for a car active within a routable map to a certain
point; When setting the zoom over 120 km zoom the GPS operating system
collapses, without (in many cases) the ability to restart the GPS
again normaly. The screen blurrs and collapses from outside to the
center and disappears totally. Restarting the GPS Colorado 400c enters
after restart the same screen mapscreen (200 km zoom) and this
collapses again within seconds. Only removing the removable SD
cardchip with the charts and entering the coldboot testsystemscreen
can get one out of this cycle. This is a very serous bug as it makes
the GPS unworkable and unrestartable. Untechnical users will not be
able to use the GPS Colorado 400c after this at all.
Even with GPS position simulation the system stalls

Cure to recover out of this vicious cycle of collapses:
remove the SD card with maps
choose STOP NAVIGATION: this ends the cycle of collapses.
close down GPS
reenter your SD card
start Up
Allways DESELECT in mapoptions the seamaps EVERYTIME you use the GPS
you turn it on for use with landmaps and car -adress routing


When I deselect the sea maps in the mapscreen options there is no
trouble at all while zooming, so the interaction of the two types of
maps 1. the routable landmap for cars and 2. the sea map ,interferere
within the mapscreen buildup program used while zooming. A special nag
is the fact that the Colorado after map deselecting the interfering
seamaps in one session, reactivates them again as an active selected
map after a cold start new session and can plague the user again
while zooming.

Quick bug fix for the next update: eliminate the automatic by default
reselecting of the sea mapset after a cold start when other or
routable maps are present. It wil prevent an unexpected collapse when
using the colorado for city to city routing with routable landmaps.
Still ,after activating those seamaps it would collaps in the
described fashion with other maps.


This bug is serious as it can make the Colorado 400c lame and
unrestartable: it needs an investigation how it can appear and which
interactions between maps and mapdisplay subprogramming cause the
trouble. A probable major update programming effort is necessary to
get the situation right.

n GPS

on second thouht and after visiting a garmin dealer we came to the
conclusion that there is a hardware failure in my new Garmin and I
should return it to the factory. Evern after updating the software it
would stall.
