I'm getting confused as to which set of detailed maps I can use with my
new 60CSx... I'd like to have a set for on the road travel to cities new
to me as well as better off road detail than the basemap gives me.

Also, can I use any microSD card in the unit or does it have to come from
Garmin?

If you get a large (like 512M) card, you can use City Nav 7 (which has
large segments for a small memory) or City Select 7 (with only a 64 meg
card you will want City Select, which has smaller segments) I'm using
City Nav in mine because I had a copy with an available unlock on it.

FWIW .. after version 7, CitySel and CityNav will be merged into City
Nav 8 .. to be released in the Summer and with smaller segments than
CityNav 7 (based on email from Garmin).

I also have Topo USA segments loaded and some from 24K Topo and
Metroguide USA 4.01 (an old and unavailable product .. which has good
detail in more rural areas)

Yes. It is also called Transflash and is available from on-line vendors.

Note: No on knows for sure whether a 1 GB micro USB card will work ..
apparently even Garmin USA.

The 60CSx will arrive with a 64 Meg card installed, by the way.

You can use any card. No need to buy it from Garmin

I just upgrades City Select 7 Europe to City Nav 8. The segements are
much too big for my 60CS. I can only load one or two of them whicht
does nog give the desired coverage. I have to fill in with the older
CS7 segements. :-(

Very true with only 56M of memory. But with the 60Cx he can have a 512M
memory card (maybe even 1 GB) which will make the segment size issue a
non-issue.

That, and the SiRF receiver/processor, is why I now have a 60Cx and have
sold my 60C to a friend with more limited needs.
