Say I have the following GPS position:

Latitude: 48192.884...
Longitude: 8289.088...

What kind of position data is this? Certainly not degrees?

Could it be the British national grid reference system as used by
Ordnance Survey maps? In that case, the waypoint above is somewhere
south of Southampton, UK: N50.87204 W1.31647 in Lon/Lat hddd.ddddd WGS
84 format.

Definitly not OSGB, could be WGS84, I seem to remember that had more digits in
one direction than the other.

Does "Say I have the following GPS position" mean that you've made this one
up as an example or do you mean that you actually do have this reference?
If the latter then can you say approximately where you think that it is
located?

I wondered if the units could be milliGrad - where there are 400 grads in a
circle (ie 400Grad = 360degrees). If so then applying the WGS84 datum
(almost certainly incorrect) would put the point in the Mediterranean about
25 miles south of Montecarlo. Alternatively if West is defined as positive
then it would be in Northern Spain about 50miles East of La Coruna.

Many thanks, you were entirely correct :)
