Is there and place on line I can find topographic maps? I downloaded
Google Earth and unless I am doing something wrong, it is not giving me
the detail that I need. I am specifically looking for a topographic map
of Italy, South West of Milan and down the West coast from Genoa.

Cartografia -> Vecchia Versione -> OK -> Acetto

IGM 1:25.000

are online maps.
The same are published in eMule network in (also) ecw format.

Grazie Piet. Looks like I am going to have to really study my Italian.
Your instructions helped a lot!

I have never used eMule. How can I find these files? Where can I find
an ecw reader?

At http://www.ermapper.com/ you can download a free ER Viewer.
A second (I think somewhat better) alternative is ECW Spy
http://www.ermapper.com/downloads/download_view.aspx?PRODUCT_VERSION_ID=187
that also gives the geo-info in the ecw file.
There are plugins for Paint Shop, Photo Shop, Irfan View etc.

At www.emule-project.net/ you can read about that network and how to enter.
Therein searching using keyword 'ecw' will show you the Italian topo maps
1:25k.
Some are 1,6 GB big. If that is too much for your applications (most graphic
programs only can count their pixels upto 32765) cutting them up in Global
Mapper 6 is easy. Then also geoinfo in the ecw is kept.
Stitching together (mosaicing) I do with ER mapper.
I use the navigation program Ozi Explorer www.oziexplorer.com that can even
use these maps on a PDA (the Ozi CE program) if I had many 2 Gb memory cards.
