If you were Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options
I got a USB-to-serial converter cable, installed the driver, and NG TOPO
doesn't recognize my GPS (Rino 130)... I've changed the connection type to
USB in the TOPO, confirmed GPS interface setting set to GARMIN....what am I
missing?

When the serial to USB converter is PNP'd by the system, it creates a
virtual COM port for it. So your application needs to connect with that
COM port, it is not connecting with a USB port.
You can look in the COM & LPT port listing in the Device Manager to see
what the COM port number is. If you're not sure which of the ones there
it is, unplug the adapter and it will go away. then it will come back
when you plug it in again.
If the Garmin has NMEA on, or NMEA out on (I don't know what the choices
are on that) then the NG software may need to be set to NMEA or generic
or something like that to get it to work.
If there are any COM port settings on the NG app or the Rino, try to get
them all on 4800 Baud 8 N 1 (8 bit, no parity, 1 stop bit).
All thing considered, it might be best to try to get the output from the
GPS in the NMEA (not Garmin) mode.

ahhh, that was it.
changed the connection type back to Serial port, confirmed/selected the
proper COM port (as shown in Device manager) and viola!! ...it works now!
Thanks Jack for pointing me in the right direction!
