Road Widening Ahead

Depending on how fast a mail-opener you are, we may have entered a new
era by the time you reach the end of this sentence. The first IIF
satellite could at this very moment be spaceborne. After a handful of
delays, the launch was most recently set back to a window of Thursday,
May 29, 11–11:19 p.m., Eastern U.S. Daylight Time. It will take a bare
three-and-a-half hours, once aloft, to reach its orbital slot. After a
period of testing, GPS IIF SV-1 will begin broadcasting the new L5
signal. More importantly, but perhaps lost in the hoorah of the hour, it
will also broadcast the L2C signal, and bring closer into view a new
practice called wide-laning.
