This is not for the car or anything, I don't want any of those car
mounted things. I just want a handheld unit that I can use while
walking around. I'd also like something that isn't thousand of dollars.
Unfortunately I've looked on ebay and that seems to be all there are
over there.

So, got any recommendations?

Decide what features you want (maps? electronic compass?) then choose an
appropriate Garmin hand-held unit.

The eTrex series are popular (I have an old monochrome Legend which has done
me many years of good service) as is the 60 series (of which I have no
personal experience).

Other brands have their devotees too but I would recommend Garmin for two
reasons:

1. After sales service (they replaced my 5 year old unit free of charge when
the rubber seal went and the screen was scratched).
2. Availability of third party mapping software, much of it freeware.

And the fact that some of that freeware third party mapping software is my
own product has nothing to do with it, of course ;)

The rock-solid Garmin 12XL has been going on eBay for $60-$100.

Read "My First GPS for Hiking" at http://gpsinformation.net/ to get
a good grounding, then come back with specific questions. We cannot
decide the best trade-off of features, maps, and price for you.

My personal 'walk around' GPS is the Garmin GPSmap 76C:
