Two weeks ago I purchased a Garmin eTrex Vista C GPS and City Select
North America v6 maps. Can I use the Vista C GPS and MapSource v6.5
software running in my laptop to do Real-Time Tracking while travelling
in a vehicle? If so what do I need to do to setup the GPS? (The maps on
the laptop are a bit easier to read than the screen on the Vista C.)

I'm still learning and do appreciate your help. Thank you. -- Justin

Yes, but Garmin's free nRoute program is much better for real-time
navigation with your laptop. It'll provide voice directions, automatic
reroutes, closeup views of upcoming turns, etc. Download it at:
http://www.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-10
and it'll work with your existing MapSource CitySelect-NA maps.

Nothing special is needed to setup the VistaC - just connect it to your
laptop the same as you do for downloading maps and/or waypoints, etc.

Thanks Peter. I did try the GPS to laptop using MapSource but the
tracking page appeared to be stuck on the "Trying Garmin Format"
message. I'll give it another try and will load the nRoute software
into my laptop. -- Justin

For some stupid rason, you have to go down at GPS page and click the Select
button, and then select USB :)
Inapt programmers can create that :(

Success! I was able to use the Garmin eTrex Vista C as well as the
Garmin GPS18 USB with the nRoute software to do real-time tracking on a
laptop.

I did not test with MapSource v6.5 and may not bother. The change
history notes for MapSource v6.6.2 beta say "Removed real-time tracking
from MapSource. Use nRoute for PC real-time tracking applications."

Thanks to all! -- Justin
