Lowrance Airmap 100 allows DM.mm and DD MM SS.ss. Will have to check
the certified GNS 430.

All the IFR aviation navigational charts I have show the position of
reporting points and navigational aids in the DD MM SS format. This is the
international format. I would find it very strange that any IFR-certified
aviation GPSr would only permit DD MM.MM input.

UK (CAA) charts all use decimal minutes.

All the maps I see show degrees and minutes with decimals. The
default setting in many GPS receivers is also that.

The reason seems to be that along a meridian one degree is one
nautical mile, so the decimals are easy to calculate from the
fractions of a mile.

I agree that this is a dangerous cause of confusion and can cost
lives. One obvious way to counteract this is to train all search
and rescue operators to make sure they fully understand this
issue and know methods to avoid confusion when talking to less
knowledgeable people.

It would also help if map and GPS makers would standardize on
one format. GPS makers could mark the preferred format as
default or preferred or standard.

Ahemn, I think that would be one minute and not one degree. It sure is a
small world but... :-)
