It is not unusual that failing students who are caught cheating will
undertake to smear the names of those who caught them... It is
especially telling that the Dean (by the OP's own admission) concurred
that the students cheated.

Naw, no student would ever blaim someone else for their failures and
for their cheating. Never, ever... And I know, my students told me so!
