I'm in the market for a handheld gps unit. I have narrowed my decision to
two units, the Garmin eTrex Legend and the Garmin eTrex Legend C. I want a
multi-purpose unit, but one of the primary uses for me will be to map out
the center of the greens and the location of hazards on the golf courses I
play regularly. One method I've seen discussed for this is to use the
various freeware and shareware overlay programs out there. My concern is
the interface of the Legend C. I understand that maps cannot be downloaded
to it from non-garmin software - does this also apply to routes and
waypoints?

I should add that my father is going to give me his Street Pilot III. While
this won't suit my golf purposes (not WAAS), it will allow me to download
maps to one additional Garmin device. This makes the auto-routing of the
Legend C particularly attractive for me, and for this reason I am not
considering other brands.

Please respond to the newsgroup only.

Regards,

HTM

Lots of software is available to upload waypoints/routes/tracklogs. And
there's also quite a bit of software support to upload your own maps as
well. One tutorial on map creation is at:
http://www.keenpeople.com/index.php?option=articles&task=viewarticle&artid=4&Itemid=3
and many of the tools and links are at:
http://gps.chrisb.org/en/download.htm

A free program mentioned in the first link above is USAPhotoMaps which
lets you display the Terraserver aerial photos and topo maps on your PC
and then create routes, waypoints, and/or tracklogs to upload to your
GPS receiver. Here's a sample screen shot of a local airport runway,
but you can also see a small portion of an adjoining golf course to get
an idea of the detail available:

The C version also supports download of up to 24 MB of map data as
compared to only 8 MB for the regular Legend. With the current $50
rebate on the color models it's not even that much more expensive to get
the LegendC - I've seen it for under $220 after rebate.

Not true. Maybe you can't upload maps to the Legend C from old fashioned,
or out of date software, but any mapping product worth it's salt should be
able to handle Garmin USB interface.

I say this as the author of a freeware mapping program, MapMan, which is
fully compatible, and tested, with Garmin USB based devices such as the
Legend C. With MapMan you can map out your golf courses and upload them to
your Legend C and you can upload or download routes and waypoints as well.

I would go for the Legend C every time. The colour screen alone is worth
it.

Whichever you buy, you can download MapMan free of charge from
http://homepages.tesco.net/~Keith.Sheppard/MapMan.htm .

fortunately not.

You may visit the review site of Joe&Jack at http://gpsinformation.net/ - or
you may directly have a look at my software Gartrip at http://www.gartrip.de

I keep seeing it said that map upload software doesn't work with USB
Garmins. I know of several mapping products which DO work with USB Garmins
and have yet to come across one which doesn't. This leaves me wondering
where this rumour comes from.

OK, when Garmin first launched the new USB based eTrex series it would have
taken the software writers, like myself, a couple of months to catch up. I
only put USB support into my product at the beginning of this year. But I
would guess that most software writers consider it a priority to keep up to
date with hardware support.

I'd be interested to hear which products _still_ don't support Garmin USB
protocol.
