I haven't actively read this group for years, since I used it to
help decide on my Garmin 45XL (yeah, it was way back there).
Now I am planning a trip to Europe with a rental car (perhaps
changing cars during the duration, thanks to weird rules about
driving in Italy) for several weeks. I'd like to have a GPS
system with me, and be able to use it in the USA afterward. I'd
also like to save waypoint data while in Europe, then cough it
up later when I get back to review the various places we went.
(I.e., it won't choke if it can't see a sat configuration that
places it in Europe and will allow waypoint review
"off-continent").
What systems are currently available that allow loading either a
US or western Europe data set (or perhaps both at the same
time)? I'm not particularly worried about the cost, but would
like something that allows navigation (in English) in both
regions. Something that comes with (or optionally) a dashboard
or windshield mount would be nice.

that it talks with no extra attachments.
Software can be purchased for Europe and US but you will need to buy 2
maps. The cheaper version (if you can still get it) is MetroGuide. The
more expensive is City Select. City Select allows you to route on the
GPS while Metro Guide routing can only be done on the PC.

Thank you. I looked at the Garmin site, but that wasn't
immediately obvious. I was thrown off by comments on their site
that the US map was "only for sale in the US" and the Euro map
was "only for sale in Europe". Maybe that means the stock
version preloaded.

Does that mean that none of the models have enough storage to
hold them both simultaneously?

Thanks for your help, I'll look at the Garmin site again and see
if I can figure out how to order the extra City Select data.

I'm not sure if you can find the Europe maps from a retailer in the US
but you can certainly find it on Ebay.

Probably not but some of the units come with expandable memory. You can
buy 2 chips and have one on each.
You might want to search on line for best price. You probably won't get
that straight from Garmin.

Sorry, I missed the original posting, so my comments might not apply.
I bought City Select Europe v. 7 last fall with no difficulty, from a
web retailer. I'm in the U.S. with a U.S. model GPS 76CS. It worked fine
during a U.K. trip, both in the 76CS and on a laptop with nRoute. It was
kind of spendy, but it was well worth the price to me. I felt kinda
proud that, with its help, I'd successfully navigated right to
out-of-the-way castle Caerlaverock in Scotland. Until the docent
reminded me that King Edward I had managed to find it in 1300 without a
problem. And of course laid siege to it.
