Plugging Pharos GPS-360 into Tomtom car mount

Hello,

I am attempting to convert the cable that came with my Pharos GPS-360
unit (with MS Streets and Trips) so that it will connect with my Tomtom
car mount. This is for personal use only. I want to use the Tomtom
connection (RJ11) so that I can power and connect everything through
the Tomtom and reduce the amount of wires in my car. I have a Dell Axim
X30.

I managed to get the pinout for the Tomtom, which is (with the RJ11 tab
up) VCC | RX | TX | Gnd. I cut off the part of the Pharos USB cable
that had the little circuit board in it, so that I could get straight
serial output (I assumed that circuit board was some sort of USB
controller?). So basically I have a cable that goes directly from the
Pharos 360 to an RJ11 plug

Pharos plug         Tomtom socket
Yellow         - VCC
Red - RX
Black         - TX
Green Brown and Orange - Gnd

This is the only combination that seems to have any effect. WinFast
Navigator shows activity (blue dot in the corner is flashing), but no
connection. Streets and Trips doesn't see anything connected to the
port. ZTerm and vxHpc terminal programs both see data coming in, and it
is not gibberish (that is to say, it is mostly numbers and letters in a
repeating pattern, without any bizarre characters). I have included a
sample of the input I am receiving on my Axim below. Can someone please
tell me what I'm doing wrong? Is what I'm trying to do flat-out
impossible? I'm sure there is a way to do this. Thanks for any help
or suggestions you can give.

The receiver is powered (GPS-360 blue LED is on and solid) and sending
data, but not in NMEA format it seems. I tried resetting the receiver
to factory defaults, as well as cold starting. I tried NMEA and SIRF. I
tried all serial combinations, but the input shown below is from ZTerm
and vxHpc, at 4800 baud, 1 stop bit, 0 parity and is the only setting
that didn't generate complete gibberish.
