Hello:
I need help with GPS track 3D in Google Earth. I have a Garmin hand
held system and recently I have taken it with me on a small plane
flight for 20 minutes.
The Garmin GPS handheld unit saved a track log as a *.gpx file. I
transfered this file to my computer and started up MAPSOURCE. I can
view it there and in one of the options I can VIEW -> VIEW GOOGLE
EARTH and it work fine but no 3D detail. I all shows as a flat line
on the earth.
The plane went up to 10,000 ft and flew around for a good bit of time.
Is there a way to see in Google Earth or some other program the 3D map
of the flight? Google Earth is great because everyone can get the
program and they can pan and zoom around to their hearts content.
Is anyone here skilled enough to figure out this problem? Thanks

Did you use the tilt control on Google Earth?

It is very simple to do it. Whan the track is loaded into GE, find it in the
left pane. Right click on the Path section (I like to deselect the points as
I find them very ugly when drawn) and choose edit. Select the second tab,
named Location. In the bottom right combo box choose Altitudes are:
ABSOLUTE. When you tilt the view you will notice the path going off the
ground.
Note: disregard the message saying you are only modifying the first point of
the set - when changed, the whole track will be elevated!

Thanks for the help. I found out how to do it but it is a little bit
different than how you described and just not quite what I am looking
for.
Once the path is loaded into GE, you are correct that it shows up in
the left pane. Right clicking on the Path selection does nothing,
lots of options (copy paste etc.) but no edit to choose from. I went
to the top toolbar in GE and chose EDIT, PROPERTIES then chose the
ALTITUDE tab. From there you can chose the ABSOLUTE setting as you
suggest but that is not what I am looking for.
The map shows you nothing different until you raise the ROUTE path
above ground level then select the tick box that says EXTEND PATH TO
GROUND. Then it just looks like one of those TRON box walls. What I
want is a 3D line or graph that shows us going to 10,000 ft down to
2,000 ft then back up to 9,000 ft. This method is nothing but a level
line, projected above the ground and 'curtains' so the line extends
back to the ground and it looks like a wall.
I'm using Google Earth 4.0.2091 Beta. I do not have the GE Pro or GE
Plus. That probably makes all the difference in helping direct me to
the menu selection options.
Thanks again for any help anyone can give.
Are you sure your track file had the actual altitudes? The Garmins with
barometric altimeters will show the "cabin pressure" altitude. I'm not
positive about the non-barometric models; I think they do use the GPS
altitude.
