Although it's a little off-topic for this group, I wanted to give a
quick reminder on the upcoming "Celestial Navigation Weekend" at
Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic Connecticut. It's only two weeks away,
June 6,7,8, 2008.

Our topics this year include "Greenwich Time and longitude by lunar
distances", "celestial navigation education", and the "fiftieth
anniversary of the modern Nautical Almanac", among other subjects. Our
speakers include academic historians and mathematicians, experienced
practical navigators, and private historians of navigation. There's a
detailed schedule on our web page for this event here:
http://www.fer3.com/Mystic2008 .
Space is limited. Please use the form on our web page to make a
reservation if you're interested in joining us.

I appreciated very much reading your post as well as the webpage. I
wish you a great success. For my part, more than the geographic, my
maths knowledge gap distances me from such "celestial" maths geniuses.

Being more of the "language" type, the name "Mystic" has attracted me.
Quote from Wikipedia:

"The name comes from the Mohegan-Montauk-Narragansett language "missi-
tuck", which describes a large (missi) river (tuck), more specifically
a river whose waters are driven into waves by either tides or winds"

It is amazing for me to notice, how the same word can derive on one
side of the Atlantic from an old original people's language, wth one
specific meaning, and on the other from Medieval French, based upon
Greek: mustikos, latinized in: mustikus, with a totally different
meaning.

"Though often referred to as a town, Mystic is not a municipality.
Rather, it is located within the towns of Groton (west of the Mystic
River) and Stonington (east of the Mystic River). "

As far as I know, there used to be a Groton Watch Co located in
Groton, owned by a Horton family until the late 1980s. Any news on
them?

Check up on other interesting matters on Mystic, e.g.
"The 1988 film Mystic Pizza got its name from a restaurant in Mystic,
which is still open and is popular with tourists. Scenes in Mystic
Pizza were shot in Mystic and nearby towns."

"In 1997, Steven Spielberg shot various scenes for the movie Amistad
at Mystic Seaport."
