I have an eTrex Legend C and a copy of MetroGuide 4.02 that I bought a
few years ago for an older Street Pilot. Autorouting works on the
Legend C with this version of MetroGuide. I'm wondering if it's worth
getting the latest CitySelect software. I assume the maps would be
more recent, but what other benefit is there to getting the latest
CitySelect (North America) over the MetroGuide 4.02? Will there be
significantly more POIs? Is there any reason, other than $$, that I
would *not* want to switch to the new CitySelect (some old threads on
this group mention that the rural coverage with CitySelect is not as
good as with MetroGuide, but I don't know if that still holds).
I will mostly use the unit for in-city navigation and some highway
driving.
Thanks for any info,
Chris

I made the move from MG 4.02 to CS 6 late last year and had occasion
to compare them in detail while marking up a 2,400-mile route in the
US Rockies. One man's opinion, then:
Highway and intersection positions are more accurate in CS 6, using
Terraserver aerial photos as the standard of comparison. MG is not
bad, perhaps 50 meters off in some places.
Yes, the newer maps do show more new roads, as expected.
POIs are plentiful in both, but I did not compare quantity and
quality of those.
Rural roads are definitely more complete in MG 4.02. I noticed this
in several areas of the Rockies, in New England, and in North
Carolina. You can load both products in your PC and your Legend if
this is important, but you can see only one at a time.
Coverage of Canada is essentially complete in CS 6, almost
non-existent in MG 4.02.
"Quality" of routing varies. Sometimes one is better, sometimes the
other, by my subjective evaluation. They both get you there.

I have both since CitySelect-NA (v6) came with the GPS V we bought and I
previously used MG 4.01 with our eMaps. I've found the routing quality
to be significantly better with CS - better placement of exit ramps,
more knowledge of one-ways and other turn restrictions, etc. Some of
that may be due to it being newer, but I think it generally has better
routing data. OTOH, MG does include some additional rural roads and
trails. Sometimes it's a plus, but a number of these additional roads
aren't actually open for public travel so it can also lead you astray.
MG is also better in coverage of streams and marine features.
I'd expect a new version of CitySelect (v7) to be coming out around
July. I'd suggest waiting to purchase until the new version is
announced since Garmin gives free upgrades if you first unlock the maps
after the announcement.
Do not forget size.
I suspect the CS v6 will be significantly bigger (for the same area)
than MG v4
Anybody care to comment ?

They are generally bigger. My local default set of SF-San Jose metro
area maps is 17.2 MB in CS v6 (21.8 with routing data) and 11.1 MB in MG
v4 (16.9 MB with routing data). It was interesting to me to see that
the routing data takes up more space in MG than in CS even though the
latter has been doing a better job of finding routes in this region.
