Changes made from version 6.12.3 to 6.12.4:

Fixed an issue detecting some Garmin mass storage devices.
Fixed an issue at application startup when the expected code pages are
not installed on the PC.
Fixed a layout issue in the Czech language waypoint dialog.

Is there some documentation somewhere which clearly explains
who can go on in updating his working MapSource copy and who
have to stay with the 6.11.5 version?

If you read the update release notes here:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

you can figure it out. It boils down to that 6.11.6 and later versions
no longer support Windows 98, Windows ME, and Windows NT.

Don't worry about Vista. I heard yesterday that Micro$oft has been
canceled Vista and will be refunding everyone's money on that. Yep,
read that on the Internet, so it must be true.

Sorry in advance for my inexperience, being basically a Mac-user-
which-has-bought-a-PC-just-for-MapSource-and-two-other-things:
what is Windows NT?

I am asking that because I have experimented problems on my
laptop PC (Windows XP Pro) after a recent update of MapSource,
and no more problem after a "downdate" (to the 6.11.5 version,
I presume, but I am not with the PC a this time to see exactly).

Windows NT is a version of Windows that eventually evolved to become
Windows 2000 (W2K). Windows NT and W2K were oriented more to serious
networking and business world requirements in comparison to Windows 3.1,
Windows 98, and finally Windows XP.

W2K was more inclined to technical users that understood their system's
hardware and software better and wanted, needed, or were willing to work
on the intricacies. After 25+ years of working with and on Windows
machines, W2K Pro is my personal favorite and current choice. And I'll
stay with it until I have to move up to something else. Windows Vista
is a horror show, I doubt it I'll ever use it if I can avoid it.

Eventually, W2K and XP became pretty compatible and similar other than
the frivolities that were aimed at the consumer level users.

Windows NT creates some confusion with Garmin's City Navigator NT
mapping. Garmin's NT means New Technology (a better map compression
algorithm) and has nothing to do with Windows NT.

XP Pro is a pretty stable version of XP I think. I seem to remember
that there was some kind of glitches or instability in a recent version
of MapSource but I cannot recall the details. You might try moving on
to the more recent 6.12.x versions. They seem to be working pretty well.

I am not anti-Mac, I've just never owned or used one except for fleeting
moments. Unlike Mac users that occasionally have a Windows machine out
of necessity, I've never been driven by necessity to own a Mac. And
life is easier with the one that you already know. :>)
