I've just paid the $75 to upgrade from City Select 6 to City Navigator
8, and I'm not a happy bunny...
I originally had MetroGuide 5, and on that, the UK was subdivided into
around 270 map tiles. When I bought CitySelect 6, I was a bit annoyed
that Garmin had reduced the number of subdivisions to around 100 tiles,
as it makes it harder to fit exactly the area you want into a handheld
with limited memory (I have a 60CS).
And then I installed CN8. The entire UK is now covered by 17 tiles. 17!
There are now routes I cover which won't all fit into memory anymore as
I am obliged to include mapping for massive areas I'm going nowhere
near.
And the best bit is that there is no way to know this has happened
without paying for the upgrade - the granularity of the mapping tiles
is hidden until you pay Garmin the $75, by which time it's too late to
change your mind.
I've already emailed Garmin to let them know what I think about this
decision, but for anyone else with a small-ish amount of memory in
their receiver - think twice before paying for CN 8.

Actually, that is surprising. Garmin has said that City Navigator NA 8
will have more segments than CN NA 7 (which has much larger segments
than earlier CN NA did).
Since I now use it in a Street Pilot III (256M memory) and 60Cx (512M),
I no longer am much affected. But by not supporting their older units
with more limited memory .. and not including this information re
segments/tiles in the specs .. they are not playing fair.

Good info: Thanks!
Stuff up?
My guess it they may hasten v.9, but not re-release v.8.
Their problem is the decision to eliminate City Select. CS has always
had finer granulation for use with the GPSRs with less memory.
Someone didn't think this through when they released CNE 8 (but no CSE
8) with large segments. Ooops!

Much as I hate to do what Garmin would clearly like me to do, I'm now
wondering about upgrading my 60CS for a 60CSx...
I haven't uploaded any of the CN 8 maps to my 60CS yet, but it was the
one receiver I had registered for use with CS 6. I presume I am still
restricted to only being able to upload CN 8 maps to two receivers, one
of which will be my 296 aviation receiver. Will my current 60CS be the
only other receiver I am allowed to upload CN 8 to, or will I be able
to use a 60CSx as long as I don't upload to the 60CS in the mean time?
