Hallo
I've found this file in my pc, but I don't remember in which way I
used to
open it. It is a italy waypoint file.
It starts with something like:

you can download it from here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?61wggv5dh5r
I would like to recover it because most of the waypoint files shows
only the main villages and cities,
while this one is very detailed.
Any hints?

That looks like the Country data from
http://www.nima.mil/gns/html/cntry_files.html World waypoints
If that's the case, gpsbabel can accept it as input.
The it.zip download has 33600 entries, with that header, and at least one
of those waypoints. The gpsbabel included with Google Earth doesn't have
"geonet" as one of the supported file options.
http://www.gpsbabel.org 1.3.4 will work.
gpsbabel -i geonet -f it.txt -o gpx -c ASCII -F it.gpx

Nothing personal, but I don't click on automatic things.

I recall that the data is only accurate to .1 degrees.
Looking at the it.gpx in Google Earth, there is a suspicious regularity to
the points.

Hi everybody.
Sorry for the downloading problem. I just uploaded to the first
online repository I googled. Anyway:
yes the regularity is suspicious and in fact (for example) there are many
small villages that are in the same positions (while I know they are
just few kms away from each other). I have also different versions
of the same file with different extensions (.wpt, ecc..) that have the
same regularity.
What I suppose is that I obtained those versions from a previous one,
with gps babel, and I lost the precision in this procedure (but
which is the original file? I absolutely don't remember even
where I got it!). All other wpt files I got from the net haven't
similar information about small villages and crossroads in
my region.
Whit this accuracy the file is useless.
Question: there are a lot of columns in the .txt file (I just copypaste
some lines below); is it possible that maybe the "lost precision"
resides in these columns? For example, what is the information
stored in DMS_LAT and DMS_LONG?

Different persons have done the conversion and saved waypoints in different
formats.

This is a "names" database. The intent is to make the presentation of
names in United States policy consistent for foreign country locations.
> Whit this accuracy the file is useless.
It is probably no better than a basemap for the country on a mapping GPS.
On a non-mapping GPS, I have selected some waypoints for general
orientation.

Degrees Minutes Seconds instead of decimal. You'll note that the seconds
for most locations are zero. How big is a "minute" in your area of
interest? There are 5373 of the 33600 points in IT that have seconds
noted. I would guess that DMS is the original notation, and the decimal is
provided for convenience.
