Again this year I have a problem with my old GarminIIIPilot for updating
the database !
Garmin seems to adopt the same Micro$oft strategy to keep you captive
and only able to pay a lot for a non-service.
The answer is to have a dedicated computer to be only used for a yearly
update ;-(((
I use a planning software (a Netherlands one) working since many years
without problems. But with Garmin ...reccurents problem due to engineers
unable to correcty program a piece of software is not a good way to
continue any deal with them...
Best wishes for those who still buy these products I no longer want
to use to avoid headaches !

Yes the *Old* Garmin equipment is different from the NEW garmin
equipment. My Oregon 400t plugs into the USB port and I start a
program called WebUpdater.
WebUpdater connects my GPS receiver to the Garmin website, determines
if I have the latest updates, and if not, automatically installs them
with no interference from my end. It tells you when the update is
finished and you unplug the USB cable and you're ready to go.
Installing Mapsource Maps is just as easy, -these days-. So if you
get a newer model Garmin, maybe your headaches will go away.
