I upgraded one of my Garmin units to a Nuvi 360 UK edition. I have
serveral other Garmin GPS's and own a Mapsource City Navigator 8 North
America DVD that I currently have unlocked on two of the units.

I loaded the North America mpas to the Nuvi but on startup it
indicated "can't unlock maps". I did some googling, and there was
some information that Garmin only supports unlocking maps on 2 units
at the same time. (Talk about punishing good customers - way to go
Garmin!) Is this true? Do I have to purchase a new DVD to use the
maps on the 3rd unit?

Is there a way to unload the maps from one of my other units. I am
not using one of the older units any more.

Yes, a 3rd unit requires you to purchase another DVD.

But, from the point of view of Garmin, you could. The only scenario
where Garmin gives you another code for free is when the unit is
irrecoverably lost (either damaged beyond repair or stolen).

I believe you can purchase another unlock code from Garmin for less than the
price of a new DVD.

Garmin has discontinued providing a free second unlock code. I believe this
is effective with map sets released after 6/1/07. It's my understanding that
separate unlocks must be purchased for each device. I assume that you can
continue to get updates for sets you've already purchased--but you'll have to
pay to update each device.

With units that do not include a CD or DVD with the mapping Garmin
states that you cannot unlock a second unit.*

With units that include a CD/DVD then you can unlock a second unit.

* it does not appear that this is implimented at the moment but is
probably an indicator of what will occur in the future.
