If I purchase the Garmin Metroguide North America V.7 DVD, how much memory
will I need on a microSD card to load the entire DVD onto the card? I don't
find this info anywhere on the Garmin site.

Also -- I assume the software will allow me to identify an area on the map
and load only that area to the microSD card?

This is for a Garmin GPSMAP 76Cx.

Thanks.

It's somewhere around 1.2 GB. But I can't see why I would ever want
the whole of those maps and no others loaded into my GPS. I can
certainly identify areas in the US and Canada that I am less likely to
be visiting than areas in some other parts of the world.

Yes, the maps are broken up into regions that average about 1 MB each
and you can select to download any combination of those regions to your
GPS.

In that case MetroGuide isn't the best choice since it's not designed
to support the auto-routing feature of that model. CityNavigator-NA
does support that feature and is the recommended product for the 76Cx.
It requires just under 1.6 GB for the whole set of maps and has larger
map regions that average about 14 MB each.

As in the previous reply: you want City Navigator, not Metroguide.
Current version is 7, but Garmin has said they will release v. 8
sometime this Summer. So if you buy now, you may want to ask about
upgrade policy.

Thanks to Peter and Phil for the suggestions.

I was not aware of the difference between the MetroGuide and the City
Navigator pertaining to the auto-route -- that info is probably in there
somewhere and I missed it when reading about the products.

The GPSMAP 76Cx has a 128MB microSD card installed -- I loaded the Garmin
topos for the Great Smoky Mountains into that card and, based on your
replies, I'll have plenty of room on the card for a few maps from the City
Navigator -- I'll be loading only a couple of small areas.

I'll put in my order tonight.

Keep in mind that you can buy additional MicroSD (TransFlash) cards. I
recently bought a Sandisk 1GB card for my GPSMAP 60CSx and put most of
the eastern seaboard states on there for a trip I was taking a few
weeks ago. It came in pretty handy--and necessary considering the 64k
card the unit came with couldn't hold everything I needed at the time.
At the moment, I also have some regional (near where I am now) US
TOPO maps on there as well.
