I know this must have been asked 1000 times but I didn't see a FAQ on
this newsgroup.
I just bought my first GPS, (Garming GPSMap 60 CSX), it comes with a
low resolution map, so I'll have to buy a more detailed map. Is
Garmin the only source for street maps? They are very expensive, I
presume those would be the only ones that work with Garmin products,
would I be right? I do have to fork out another $100 I guess for the
USA map?
Thanks!

The maps have to be in a Garmin format. They come from three main sources
- Garmin themselves, by far the largest range.
- A few licensed sub-suppliers who have arrangements with Garmin for their
code.
- People using reverse-engineering to make Garmin compatible maps.
The last can be free, or very cheap, but they have their limitations. Try
http://mapcenter.cgpsmapper.com/ for one site listing some of the
not-made-by-Garmin maps.

There are some limited map sets from other sources, but the answer is
essentially yes. For ease of use and range of coverage, the Gamrin maps
are the proper solution.
I bought the "Auto Navigation Kit" from tvnav.com.
http://www.tvnav.com/60csxacc.htm That comes with the USA maps, and a few
automotive mounts, and a cable that I've never used.

Thank you for the answer. Another quick question if I could: When I
look at the map on my computer with their software it shows some
features that are not displayed in the GPS. I'm currently living in
Lagos. When I look at the Lagos map in the computer is has a rough
low resolution map of the islands around Lagos. However in the GPS it
shows everything as solid mass of land (Without the water channels).
Am I doing something wrong? Shouldn't the be the same?
Thanks!
